Christopher Palmer strikes again! It is undoubtedly one of the great film scores, and Jarvi more than does it justice with the help of impassioned singing and playing from all concerned.

Reviews

"...Intelligent and aurally incisive, the performance attests to Neeme Jarvi’s enduring skills as a Prokofiev interpreter of dramatic and gripping power." ****

Audiophile Audition - 7 January 2010

“… an expansively powerful reading from Jarvi, his Philharmonia forces and excellent soloists.”

“This may be the best Ivan of them all. Linda Finnie and Nikita Storojev turn in fine work, as do the chorus and orchestra. The sound reproduction is excellent and the notes informative. Highly recommended!”

“If you have not come across the concert scenario for the film music for Ivan The Terrible then you have a treat in store with Jarvi’s fulsomely recorded version. This sequence differs from several other versions in that there is no narrator. The Russian Sea is taken by Linda Finnie who adopts a completely idiomatic Slavonic wobble. This contrasts with the deep and luxurious, indeed magical, pile of the Philharmonic Chorus. The recording is stunning with the subtle hard orchestral underpinning for ‘The Wedding’ lovingly caught beneath the whirling chorus.”
