Bowen: Chamber Works

Chandos continues to champion the works of York Bowen, this time turning to the chamber works of this great composer who, after years of neglect, is finding ever growing audiences. The works are performed by the Gould Piano Trio, one of the finest ensembles of their kind, which is joined by the clarinettist Robert Plane, violinist Mia Cooper, and violist David Adams.

The Piano Trio in E minor is arguably Bowen’s masterpiece of chamber music and one of the finest such works by a British composer. It features a natural fluency and melodic expression that are hallmarks of Bowen’s output. The Phantasy Quintet is a fascinating work for the virtually unique combination of bass clarinet and string quartet. Flowing seamlessly, the music masterfully integrates the bass clarinet into the texture. Also included is the first movement from the unfinished early Piano Trio in D minor, edited for this premiere recording by the Gould Piano Trio. Its structure is simpler and less organic than the later works but it is an intriguing piece and clearly the work of a gifted creative figure. The Rhapsody Trio in A minor and Clarinet Sonata in F minor complete the album.

Reviews

                         IRR Outstanding
"... the performances are impossible to fault, with total commitment and beauty of tone throughout. The casting is imaginative ... This is in every way a collaborative venture, and one which is an invaluable addition to the Bowen discography."
Nicholas Salwey - International Record Review - April 2014

“…the Gould Piano Trio and friends perform all this enticing repertoire with matchless understanding, and they have been afforded glowingly realistic sound by the Chandos production team. Not to be missed.”

Andrew Achenbach – Gramophone magazine – April 2014

                                              Performance ****      Recording ****
"... The Gould Piano Trio, the outstanding clarinettist Robert Plane and their colleagues, well recorded, play with fine teamwork and a strong feeling for Bowen’s idiom...this is a valuable introduction to a formidably well equipped, if doggedly conservative, late Romantic composer."
Anthony Burton - BBC Music magazine - April 2014

"... Wedded to tonality, the works on this gorgeous disc fall easily on the ear, its success largely residing on the Sheffield-born pianist, Benjamin Frith, the lynchpin of the Gould Piano Trio, and accompanist to Robert Plance in the Clarinet Sonata. There is passion, yearning and nostalgia and Alice Neary;s cello solos are so perfectly into the period idiom."
David Denton - The Yorkshire Post - 21 February 2014
