Rubbra: Symphony No. 10, etc. – Bournemouth Sinfonietta, Schönzeler‘Rubbra’s Tenth Symphony is a short, one-movement work, whose opening has a Sibelian seriousness and a string atmosphere that grip one immediately. Schönzeler is scrupulously attentive to dynamic nuance and internal balance, while keeping a firm grip on the architecture as a whole. The 1977 recording has been impressively remastered. It has a warm acoustic and reproduces natural, well-placed tone. The upper range is crisply defined. The Farnaby Variations is a pre-war work whose charm Schönzeler uncovers effectively, revealing its textures to best advantage. ‘Loth to Deport’, the best-known movement, has gentleness and vision in this performance. Strongly recommended… indispensable.’
