Ivor Novello is one of the great composers of the British musical theatre, famed throughout the English-speaking world as the composer and writer of seven successive operettas which dominated the West End stage for almost twenty years. Between 1935 and 1952 people flocked to the theatre, eager to escape the harsh reality of world war and post-war depression by being temporarily transported to a theatrical fantasy world which offered a message of hope for the future. The operettas contained a wealth of romantic music, the songs displaying an appealing melodic simplicity and richness of harmony which complemented the unashamedly sentimental lyrics. Such a recipe provided welcome relief and comfort during those troubled years and explains why Ivor Novello became a national hero whose music continues to delight millions of devotees today.
Marilyn Hill Smith began her career as principal soprano with English National Opera, and subsequently performed with other prestigious opera companies. She has worked with D’Oyly Carte and New Sadler’s Wells Opera and her diverse roles have ranged from Constanze in Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio to Chief of Police in Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre. She travels extensively, singing a widely varied repertoire, and she broadcasts regularly. Marilyn Hill Smith has been hailed by critics as one of the finest operetta sopranos of her generation.
