Covid-19: Update: 23rd July 2020

During the current unprecedented situation, Chandos Records continues to trade as normally as possible. As many of our staff are working remotely, we would ask you to submit any queries online here rather than by telephone. CD orders are being despatched on the next working day, but understandably delivery times will vary regionally, and may take significantly longer than usual, depending on your location.  Please note that we will not be despatching orders to countries placed ‘on suspension’ by UK’s Royal Mail. We thank you for your understanding, and wish all our customers a healthy outcome!

Recording of the Month

Performance *****      Recording *****

“… All six performances are conducted by the orchestra’s music director Franz Welser-Möst … Overall, they [Cleveland Orchestra] paint a picture of sovereign technical command, with an upholstered warmth of tone not automatically in the DNA of American orchestras… The sound on all three discs is outstandingly well balanced and transparent, reflecting the exceptional acoustic of the orchestra’s Severance Hall headquarters. Audience noise is virtually non-existent, and there is no applause at the end of performances, which have the polish of studio recordings…”

“… All the brass so the Minnesota Orchestra proud … the sounds are beguiling to the last, and the essential triumph of engineering in this most testing of symphonies is peerless.”

“… this beautifully engineered studio recording under Kiril Karabits has all the necessary adrenaline to keep the listener fully engaged. Karabits is particularly effective in negotiating the tricky changes of tempo in the opening ‘Babi Yar’ movement and ensures that the tension is sustained right to the very end in the emotionally shattering climax of the closing bars… the new release certainly benefits from the fine singing of Tisbulko and the more authentic vocal timbres of the combined Russian choirs.”

“… the work [Die Seejungfrau] has an unmistakable cumulative power, and its iridescent orchestration is as beautiful as anyone’s… the players [NPO] rise impressively to the score’s intricate technical demands, and Marc Albrecht’s conducting has superb sweep and sureness of purpose.”

“… Soloist Suzuki, with the lively and responsive partnership of the Bach Collegium Japan provide invigorating performances… Masamitsu San’ nomiya is an expressive oboist, and his eloquent dialogue with Suzuki is pleasing.”

“… what makes this fine-honed account stand out from the pack is the inclusion of Astor Piazolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires (arranged expertly by Peter von Wienhardt), which season by season introduces each concerto in the traditional Vivaldi order – Spring Summer, Autumn and Winter… Steinbacher treads the fine line between Argentinian heat and Parisian cool with flair and sensitivity…”
