  Chandos Scoops Award!

John Wilson and Sinfonia of London triumph at BBC Music Magazine awards

Their acclaimed recording of Korngold's Symphony in F# has won this year's BBC Music Magazine Orchestral award, voted for by the listening public. On hearing the news, John Wilson said "It’s a great thrill to win the BBC Music Magazine award. The Korngold Symphony is a piece I’ve loved for years and have always wanted to record it. My thanks go to the BBC for their support and to the team at Chandos Records. But I couldn’t have done any of this without the terrific players who gave everything they could, every minute of every recording session - it was the privilege of my life to make music with them. From all of us at Sinfonia of London, thank you.’"

Updated 31st March 2020

During the current unprecedented situation, Chandos records will remain open as usual. As many of our staff are now working remotely, we would ask you where possible to submit any queries online here rather than by telephone. CD orders are being despatched on the next working day as normal, but understandably delivery times will vary regionally, and take significantly longer than usual, depending on your location. As of 31st March, we will not be dispatching orders to countries placed ‘on suspension’ by UK’s Royal Mail. We thank you for your understanding, and wish all our customers a healthy outcome!

"... this astonishing and adventurous guitarist ... plays with such depth of tone, colour and intricacies of touch that is is as though he's at a harpsichord, not strumming or plucked fretted strings... Shibe's music-making is masterful, beautiful and convincing in every way... Above all, Shibe awes us with the exquisite tone balance across the whole range, from dancing beauties up on top to bass notes that growl like a contented bear..." *****

“… The top attractions are a Clementi sonata with a Bach-haunted adagio, a brooding, proto-romantic sonata by Dussek, and Bavouzet’s fleet fingers and feet working his Yamaha CFX concert grand.” ****

“…Tilling’s is a wonderfully flexible instrument, silvery-bright at the top, but with an unexpected warmth and guttural edge lower in the voice that brings the bolder colours of cabaret to Korngold’s Schneeglöckchen…  just when we’re settling into Korngold and Berg’s rhapsodic language, we’re pulled up by the almost Schubertian freshness and clean lines of Zemlinsky’s folk-poem settings. Tilling is at her best in these pencil-sketches of nature – birds, roses, stars, the moon – where restraint speaks louder than excess, and her interplay with pianist Paul Rivinius is at its most conversational and instinctive… “ ****

"... The Handel and Vivaldi recital comprises four of those composers' most-loved Latin vocal works, all of which provide the soloist with countless glorious melodies, and plenty of quick passagework to spark vocal fireworks - all of which is bread and butter to Davidson. It's difficult to imagine a voice more ethereally pure or technically dazzling than hers. Needless to say, there is no demand in any of the works to which Davidson is not equal."

“… Lortie more than meets the pianistic and musical challenge of Faure’s unshowy virtuosity, his riding of each dappled ebb and flow of the BArcolles reflecting a mature mastery. Nor is there just the rarefied Fauré on show, his insouciant charm and playfulness being to the fore and captured perfectly in the Theme and Variations… “
