BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
Formed in 1935 and based at City Halls in Glasgow since 2006, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is Scotland’s national broadcasting orchestra and performs throughout Scotland. It has been at the heart of the nation’s cultural life for many years, having a well-earned reputation for its creative ambition, pioneering spirit, and wide range of repertoire. Under its Chief Conductor, Thomas Dausgaard, Principal Guest Conductor, Ilan Volkov, Artist-in-Association, Matthias Pintscher, and Associate Guest Conductor, John Wilson, the Orchestra maintains a busy schedule of broadcasts for BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Television, and online. It is also Scotland’s leading champion of new music and has strong links with local communities through its outreach programme. It is a partner in Big Noise, Scotland’s project for social change through music, plays a major role in the BBC’s Ten Pieces initiative, and has a close association with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra appears regularly at the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festival, as well as at festivals and venues throughout the world. It is a past recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Best Orchestra, its commercial recordings having received a number of prizes, including four Gramophone Awards. www.bbc.co.uk/bbcsso
