Sarah Connolly

Born in County Durham, the mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly CBE studied piano and singing at the Royal College of Music, of which she is now a Fellow. On the operatic stage she has appeared as Dido (Dido and Aeneas) at The Royal Opera, Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala, Milan and Théâtre royal de la Monnaie, Brussels, the Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos) and Annio (La clemenza di Tito) at The Metropolitan Opera, New York, Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde) at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Orfeo (Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice) and Lucretia (The Rape of Lucretia) at Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich, Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier) at Scottish Opera and English National Opera, Romeo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi) and the title role in Maria Stuarda at Opera North, and Nerone (L’incoronazione di Poppea) at Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. A renowned Handelian, she has sung the title role in Giulio Cesare at Glyndebourne Festival Opera and De Nederlandse Opera, Sesto (Giulio Cesare) at the Opéra national de Paris, the title roles in Agrippina, Xerxes and Ariodante as well as Ruggiero (Alcina) at English National Opera, Ino / Juno (Semele) at San Francisco Opera and the title roles in Serse and Ariodante at New York City Opera.Sarah Connolly was made a CBE in the 2010 New Year Honours.
