Covid-19: Update: 17th Feb 2021

During the current unprecedented situation, Chandos Records continues to trade as normally as possible. As many of our staff are working remotely, we would ask you to submit any queries online here rather than by telephone. CD orders are being despatched on the next working day, but understandably due to the pandemic delivery times will vary and take significantly longer than usual, depending on your location. Please note there are also countries ‘on suspension’ by UK’s Royal Mail. Following Brexit EU customers should view this page regarding taxation. We thank you for your understanding.

“This delightful collection of French wind music contains many gems, mostly miniatures. The major work is the Quintet Op 9. an early work by André Caplet (l878 - 1925) who was a friend of Debussy's, and orchestrated several of the latter's works The four-movement Quintet is the longest on this disk (27:33) with a charming Scherzo… the engineers have captured the light-textured sounds of these instruments.”

“…the music is highly accessible, and some of these pieces certainly deserve being made available on silver disc. The Belgian composer Marcel Poot was one of the most striking musical figures of his time, with a spicy compositional style that exemplified his zest for life. His cycle of seven symphonies which show the influence of Ravel, Stravinsky and jazz.”

“… admirers of organ music will regard certain composers as essential to their collection, from Bach to Messiaen And Duruflé certainly deserves a place, particularly in performances that do as much justice to the music as Thomas Trotter does here on the Kings College label.”

“This generously filled disc contains most of the familiar Spanish composers (Granados, Albeniz et al), alongside others who may be less well known. All are given the greatest possible advocacy in the colourful, sensitive performances here by Franz Halasz who has the full measure of this music… a very welcome disc.”

“…highly impressive reading in impactful surround sound of Vaughan Williams’ two most muscular symphonies, 4 and 6, is an absolute winner … this new coupling becomes a highly competitive way of experiencing the drama and exhilaration of both works in truly exemplary performances …”

“… the whole Helsinki Philharmoinc plays with a sumptuousness that doesn’t compromise musical suspense… the Hungarian mezzo Szilvia Vörös is almost ideal, delivering plenty of soft singing to contribute to the overall tonal picture. Still a young singer (unlike some famous Judiths), she has a beautifully warm middle register and distinctive tone… the young Finnish bass Mika Kares, also putting the emphasis on mellow, soft-grained vocalism and sounding suitably haunted by his past. If he avoids the dynamic extremes familiar in this role, that too is all in keeping with a refreshing interpretation.”
