Heaven to Earth could well be the soundtrack to humankind’s eternal desire for peace and reconciliation. The recording had its origins in an American radio broadcast on 11 September 2002, reflecting on the events of one year earlier and laying out hopes for a happier future. One hundred years of sacred choral music is presented here, from the distinctive voices of Bernstein, Ives, Schoenberg and Stravinsky, to the beauty and mystery of Duruflé, Verdi and Vaughan Williams. The famous Barber Agnus Dei receives special treatment as the a capella choral version is accompanies by strings, evoking the work’s origins as a string quartet.

The Westminster Choir, based in Princeton, New Jersey, has been setting standards of choral excellence in America for over 80 years. Through dozens of recordings and numerous international tours, their "full bodied, incisive singing" (The New York Times) has impressed audiences throughout the United States, as well as in Europe and Asia. They regularly perform with the New York Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestra, and have also appeared with the Royal Concertgebouw and Cleveland Orchestras.

Joseph Flummerfelt, Westminster Choir’s director for 33 years, was named Musical America’s 2004 Conductor of the Year. Retiring from Westminster Choir College in 2004, Heaven to Earth provided the perfect memento of his legacy, preserving his close association with and celebrated interpretations of the works on this recording.
