"Camerata Köln, of course, does complete justice to these works in this performance every small (and rapidly occuring) nuance comes out clearly and unambiguously. Karl Kaiser’s flute has a nicely rich tone, while hans-Peter Westermann blends his oboe well with the two violins, played with excellent ensemble by Verena Schoneweg and Ingeborg Scheerer. The continuo, performed by Julie Borsodi on the cello and Sabine Bauer on harpsichord, is nicely discreet and never overwhelming. In short, I think this is a must-have for any collection, not only of French music of the 18th century, but for anyone who really wants to know just how complex and wonder chamber music by Philidor can be. Two of the quartets are played on baroque oboe by Hans-Peter Westermann, and the rest are played on aroque flute by karl Kaiser.Camerata Koln is a period instrument group established in 1979 at the Cologne Conservatory. The performers are very good, the intonation is exact, and the playing is stylish. Westermann is the best baroque oboist I’ve heard.
