About
1615: Gabrieli in Venice
This recording pays homage to one of the most influential musicians of the Venetian Renaissance from within one of the great buildings of the English Renaissance.
Much of the music of Giovanni Gabrieli was composed for grand ceremonial occasions. 2015 marks not just the 400th anniversary of the publication of this collection of works from 1615, but also the 500th anniversary of the completion of King’s College Chapel. The Choir celebrates these anniversaries with the first classical album ever to use Dolby’s new Atmos technology to reproduce the acoustics of the Chapel with unprecedented realism.
As well as principal organist at St Mark’s Basilica, Gabrieli was a prolific composer of sacred vocal and instrumental music. The early brass ensembles for which he composed are no longer to be found performing in the Basilica, but the tradition is alive and well in Cambridge: the Choir is joined by His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts playing faithful recreations of instruments from the composer’s time.

Reviews
"... it’s an exciting recording of this consistently brilliant music, with some delightful solos commencing with treble Gabriel May’s pure and confident start to the disc-opener In ecclesiis " *****
Catherine Groom - Early Music Today magazine - March-May 2016
Performance **** Recording ****
"... the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge here shows its pedigree. The choral sound is candid and transparent, the lower, adult voices sensitively balanced so as not to swamp the delicate timbre of the boy choristers. His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts offer flawless, vocally-inspired ensemble playing, their plangent wind instruments gleaming and glimmering liek gold mosaics in San Marco. Stephen Cleobury favours stately and reverential tempos that let the music breathe ..."
Kate Bolton-Porciatti - BBC Music magazine - February 2016
"Stephen Cleobury directs and balances his forces with exemplary skill ensuring throughout that the solo voices are never overwhelmed by the brass and that the full splendour of the music is communicated to the listener The sound is breathtaking in its ability to recreate the justly famous acoustic of the chapel in one’s listening room In every way an inspiring release."
Graham Williams - HR Audio.net - 10 December 2015
