About
Schubert’s String Trio was modeled after the example of Beethoven, and its transparent textures, Classical structure and fine interplay are capped by a charming Rondo finale. Composed over a decade later, during the period of his final illness, the String Quintet is wholly different in character. Scored for two violins, viola and two cellos, it is one of the most compelling and moving works in the chamber music canon, and stands as the summation of Schubert’s writing for chamber forces. Praised by The Strad magazine and The New York Times, internationally renowned cellist Amit Peled is acclaimed as one of the most exciting and virtuosic instrumentalists on the concert stage today. Peled has released over a dozen recordings on several labels including Naxos. The Aviv Quartet made their Naxos debut in 2003, presenting Hoffmeister’s Op. 14 String Quartets (8.555952). It was followed by Schulhoff’s String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2 on 8.570965, which received positive feedback from ClassicsToday.com: ‘This music, rhythmically charged and alternately folk-inflected and harmonically contemporary, is absolutely wonderful, and it’s very well played... The group is also quite sensitive to Schulhoff’s use of tone-color’.

"…These are excellent musicians, and so is the sound."
Donald R Vroon - American Record Guide - September/October 2020
“… All in all, these performances have much to commend them and very few areas of contention. Schubert is well served, and the general atmosphere of geniality does not in any way diminish the sheer genius which is at the heart of these two works. Both receive other performances on record which are more memorable and assertive, but I very much like the direct and honest approach of the Aviv Quartet which puts the music very much to the forefront and keeps interpretative idiosyncrasies well out of the picture. A comfortable recorded sound from a Swiss church seems ideally suited to this playing.”
Marc Rochester – MusicWeb-International.com – 9 December 2020
"A light but not lightweight approach imbues this with a sense of wonder."
Julian Haylock - The Strad - September 2020
"... It's [D581] not a work from Schubert;s full maturity but he inhabits the form completely, offering music that gives all three instruments something worthwhile to do, while never sounding like a cut-rate quartet with something important missing. The Aviv Quartet (minus second violinist Philippe Villafranca) give awell-observed and considered reading, making just about the best possile case for this often ignored work. The same observance of subtleties of the score carries over into the Quintet, for which the Aviv Quartet are joined by the Israeli-American cellist Amit Peled. Everything is in the right place, intonation is by and large spot-on and no marking passes by without having some effect on what we hear. It's a beautiful performance in many ways..."
