Notes
In addition to his own career, conductor Christoph Eschenbach has always promoted young talented musicians. One of these young prodigies is the German-Korean pianist Christopher Park, who has begun to forge his own successful path. In a rare moment both artists came together for a concert and production with NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester in 2014. This performance is presented here. The release features solo piano pieces by Christopher Park and shows us that he simply cannot mask his virtuosity and musical talent.

“… Christopher Eschenbach is a vital partner in the Wanderer, offering detailed but never stuffy support (rarely has Liszt’s expansion of Schubert’s original sounded as brilliantly orchestrated) and an excellent sense of give-and-take. Jens F. Laurson’s notes are illuminating, and Capriccio’s sound is first-rate as well. Warmly welcomed.”

“A rather unusual combination of repertoire.”

“…Park and Christoph Eschenbach form a community of souls to shape Franz Schubert’s and Liszt’s Wanderer Fantasy in the most intensive and extremely sensitive way, atmospherically certainly closer to the original than to Liszt… Park and Eschenbach perfectly succeed in their contemplative approach, never showing off, but by making the great musical arcs very expressive. In the Piano Sonata D. 664, Park shows just how well he knows how to deal with Schubert’s cantabile… he reveals both a pianistic play of particular clarity and luminosity and a range of moods and feelings which he gives great depth with rubato and dynamic contrasts… Park then plays the Handel Variations by Johannes Brahms with refreshing spontaneity, enriched with bold rubato, very eloquent dynamic nuances and an admirable palette of colours." ****
