Miguel de Fuenllana’s book Orphenica lyra (Sevilla, 1554) is one of the most magnificent achievements in the whole of the literature for the vihuela, both in terms of the wide range of works it includes and its consummate technical mastery. It includes many arrangements for vihuela or vihuela and voice of pieces from other composers, such as Mateo Flecha, Juan Vasquez, or Cristobal de Morales. Jose Miguel Moreno’s ensemble takes its name from Fuenllana’s publication and brings together an exquisite group of early music specialists including singers Nuria Rial and Carlos Mena, violagambist Guido Balestracci and percussionist David Mayoral, for a sparkling performance representative of Spain’s 16th-century song writing.
