We are delighted - and extremely proud - to have been awarded Gramophone's coveted 'label of the year'. Editor Martin Cullingford writes "A commitment to the finest artists and the highest sound quality, the Colchester-based company is a shining beacon for the art of recording".

We are saddened to hear that the conductor Bramwell Tovey has passed away. Known for his work with Brass Bands & orchestras, he will be greatly missed.

Artist in Focus

Edward Gardner

Edward Gardner was born in Gloucester in 1974 and studied at Cambridge University and under Colin Metters at the Royal College of Music. After three years at The Hallé Orchestra assisting Mark Elder, and a further three years as Musical Director of Glyndebourne Touring Opera he began his tenure as Music Director of English National Opera with a new, critically acclaimed production of Britten’s Death in Venice. His many successes with the company won him the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for best Conductor in 2008 and the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera in 2009. Equally successful outside English National Opera, he made his debut in 2005 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and has been re-invited each year, conducting the UK premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s Adriana Mater in concert at the Barbican in 2008 as well as making his BBC Proms debut. He works regularly with the Hallé, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in the UK. Abroad, he works with the Bamberg Symphony, Gothenburg Symphony, Bergen Philharmonic, Trondheim Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Saint Louis Symphony, and Indianapolis Symphony orchestras as well as the NAC Orchestra, Ottawa, amongst others. Having made a number of recordings, Edward Gardner signed an exclusive contract with Chandos Records in 2009.

“…Despite the interesting range of influences and musical styles presented here, Opsahl’s music is consistently compelling and sincerely expressive. I can imagine that it would have an even greater impact within or alongside the spaces and objects that initiated her compositions, but it speaks well for her music that it can also stand alone.”

“…Adam Kent makes the most of all of this music, playing with conviction, skill, and innate musicality. I can see why León sings his praises so highly and suspect that he’d be considered a major artist regardless as to whose music he might be performing. Here, he is provided with first-rate works into which to pour his artistry. Thus, this CD is self-recommending, but I’ll add my hearty recommendation nonetheless.”
