This Ninth Book of Madrigals of 1599 was the last collection by Luca Marenzio to be published during his lifetime. The prevailing antiquity of the poetry chosen by Marenzio (including Petrarca and even Dante) is matched by a musically elevated, tense style very well understood and brought forward by the singers of La Venexiana, joined here by a delicate continuo ensemble with two lutes and a harpsichord.
