‘Farewell’ – Camerata Zürich, Marc Kissóczy
This inventive new CD is made up of music associated with 'Farewell', of saying 'goodbye', though not always with regret, for it begins with Haydn's great 'Farewell' Symphony (Der Abschied-Sinfonie) which he wrote as a gentle reminder to his patron, who took the hint in good faith. It is followed by four works by 20th-century Swiss composers, all on the subject of 'farewell' or 'in memoriam' - the first three are short movements by some of the finest Swiss composers of the era - Frank Martin, Wladimir Vogel, and Hermann Haller - and ends with the Symphony for Strings and Timpani 'In Memoriam' by Hans Schaueble. The performances by the Camerata Zurich Orchestra under the brilliant Marc Kissóczy are superb, as is the recording.
