The Bournemouth orchestra plays superbly for the composer’s gramdson - those lusty French horns alone are worth the price of admission- and he may be truly proud of them, but even more proud of what his grandfather has left us here
Steven J Haller - American Record Guide - November/December 2012
Conductore Marc Andreae, the composer’s son, clearly learned his trade well from his father. This music could hardly hope for a more committed and empathic advocate, and the Bournemouth Symphony gives him everything for which he couldask. The recorded acoustic is spacious and natural Enjoyabe overall, but urgently recomended for the symphony.
James A Altena - Fanfare - November/December 2012
The music is both characterful and delightful and brings Andreae’s musical personality into sharper focus; moreover, the principal work here, his Symphony in C major of 1919, is clearly a major utterance that richly deserves its revival There is clearly more than filial piety in Marc Andreae’s performances: all of this is music that glories in the sonorous possibilities of the twentieth-century orchestra and serves up the vivid colouring accordingly, and the Bournmouth Symphony Orchestra aquits itself admirably in such unfamiliar repertoire. Guild’s sonics are first class. This important release should appeal to collectors of European orchestral music from the inter-war period.
Calum MacDonald - International Record Review - March 2012
Memorable and uplifting … music of far and wide appeal: entirely tonal, melodic, beautifully structured, and orchestrated with superb clarity and colour."
MusicWeb International - February 2012
Volkmar Andreae not only conducted the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra for 40 years, but also wrote luscious music reminiscent of Franck, Stravinsky and Strauss, yet with a zest all its own. Conducted by Marc, his grandson, this selection includes his remarkable First Symphony and the dramatic Music for Orchestra, which seems like the soundtrack for some undisclosed melodrama. A delightful rediscovery.
