Its two movements reveal some highly resourceful structural thinking, especially the second variation form, here given real character and contrast by Matthew Jones and Annabel Thwaite. The two pieces for violin and piano are also gems, especially the plangent Canzonetta based on a troubadour melody and which Jones ‘songs’ with a touching melancholy and liquid tone.”
