“The Storioni Trio (Bart van de Roer, piano; Wouter Vossen, violin; Marc Vossen, cello) already has made two fine recordings for Pentatone; their SACD of two Schubert piano trios was mentioned on this site. Now they have another winner, the first two of the three trios for piano and strings of Johannes Brahms. The recording was made in Concertboerderij Valthermond in the Netherlands in December 2007. A brief (7:00) bonus is a DVD that shows these young artists performing the scherzo from Trio No. 1. Excellent sound, with performers in front.”

“The trios also sound like they are being interpreted by musicians who’ve grown up in the later years of the twentieth century: warm but not sentimental, driven but not inflexible, and more concerned with expressing the composer’s intentions than in showcasing themselves. The combination is appealing, especially in PentaTone’s super audio sound, which is ideally balanced between crystalline clarity and vivid immediacy”.

“The Storioni has been favorably reviewed in these pages; its Brahms is of the expansive and dignified model. Clearly the Storionis like a lot of weight in their playing, and this is a full, well-built recording.”
