Slavonic Reflections, recorded by Nelly Akopian-Tamarina in recital at Wigmore Hall, is a highly personal collection of piano music containing Mazurka’s by Chopin, Janácek’s cycle In the Mist, as well as encores by Medtner and Liadov. The programme breathes a melancholic air of sadness, while simultaneously showing an equally Slavonic inclination to dance, as well as a fascination for nature. Nelly Akopian-Tamarina belongs to a distinguished tradition of playing stretching back to the great Russian school of Scriabin, Rachmaninov and Medtner. Slavonic Reflections is her second PENTATONE release, after a 2017 Brahms album that The Guardian praised as “enchanting, intimate and irresistible”, while BBC Music Magazine described it as “revelatory Brahms from another age”.

“… Akopian-Tamarina’s playing astonishes from the very beginning… this is a worthwhile musical experience …”
Scott Noriega - Fanfare – July/August 2021
“… It’s been a long time since I’ve heard Chopin mazurkas made so engrossing that my mind never wandered. Partly this is a matter of not knowing where Akopian-Tamarin’s poetic instincts are going to take her next. Equally, though, it’s the impression of a vulnerable selflessness, which cannot be faked and which goes straight to the heart of the music.”
David Fanning – Gramophone magazine – January 2021

"... the sincerity and deep musicianship of Akopian-Tamarina are never in doubt, and they're very much complemented by her intelligent and informative note..."
David Nice - BBC Music Magazine - January 2021
“… The intensity and inward focus she [Akopian] brings to her programme of Chopin mazurkas, Janácek’s In the Mists and short pieces by Medtner and Liadov makes the whole thing spellbinding.”
Erica Jeal – The Guardian – 26 November 2020
