About
After their acclaimed Cavalleria rusticana recording, Marek Janowski and the Dresdner Philharmonie now present Puccini’s Il Tabarro. Puccini composed this piece as the first panel of his Trittico (1918), a novel work combining three one-act operas, and also containing Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. The explosive story about illicit love and revenge on the banks of the Seine recalls the Verismo of Mascagni’s Cavalleria. Beneath the Verismo surface, however, Il Tabarro is a highly modern piece, full of Impressionist harmonies, allusions to Stravinsky and dramatically significant self-borrowings. In this recording, Janowski and the orchestra particularly showcase the symphonic quality of Puccini’s music. They are supported by an outstanding cast of soloists, including Melody Moore as Giorgetta, Brian Jagde as Luigi and Lester Lynch as Michele, as well as the MDR Leipzig Radio Choir. Marek Janowski is one of the most celebrated conductors of our times, and enjoys a vast PENTATONE discography including a recent recording of Weber’s Der Freischütz (2019) with the MDR Leipzig Radio Choir. This is the second PENTATONE release of the Dresdner Philharmonie with Janowski, after Cavalleria rusticana (2020), which also featured the same three main soloists. Melody Moore and Lester Lynch both have participated in several PENTATONE recordings, including Verdi’s Otello (2017).

“The least known of Puccini’s Trittico receives a full blooded and idiomatic reading from Marek Janowski. His orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonie, sounds right, well versed into Puccini’s atmospheric score. No reservations here for the cast, who all satisfy, with well chosen voices … The sound is spacious and Marek Janowski lets the action unfold with total command of the action. A fine recording.” *****

“Fine conducting and an excellent cast combine to provide much pleasure.”

George Hall – BBC Music magazine – February 2021
“… The character roles are strongly etched, and I particularly loved Roxana Constantinescu and Martin-Jan Nijhof’s final exit duet as La Frugola and Talpa. The MDR Leipzig Radio Chorus makes a small but strong contribution. Whilst the orchestra plays finely for Marek Janowski, making a strong contribution to the recording, overall I found Janowski’s approach to tempos rather too steady, too sensible…”

"... An outstanding release!"
ClassicalCDReview.com - December 2020
“… The baritone Lester Lynch is a vocally and dramatically accurate singer. Brian Jadge sings expressively with a confident tenor voice, and perfectly portrays the torn figure of Luigi. He shows the frustration of the extinguisher as well as the enthusiasm of the lover. At the end, I find the orchestra’s playing particularly interesting…” ****
Remy Franck - Pizzicato.lu – 15 December 2020
“… The American principals harness plenty of decibels. Brian Jagde has developed into quite a stentorian tenor, here as the rough-handed stevedore Luigi, and has the most Italianate tone of the three. Melody Moore sings a rich-voiced Giorgetta, successfully avoiding any hint of squalliness at the top. Lester Lynch is a crusty, effortful Michele …hurling his bruising baritone into the climax of his monologue ‘Nulla silenzio’. Among minor roles, Roxana Constantinescu is good as the chatterbox La Frugola …”
