Notes
Born in Liège, Belgium, in 1873, Joseph Jongen showed an outstanding precocity for music from a very early age, and was admitted to the Liège Conservatoire at the extraordinarily young age of seven. He won a First Prize for fugue in 1895 and honours diplomas in piano and organ the next year. In 1897, he won the Belgian Prix de Rome, which allowed him to travel to Italy, Germany, and France, where he experienced the music of Brahms and Richard Strauss, Fauré, Debussy, and Ravel, all of which would exert an influence on the young composer.
Although he composed in numerous genres, including the symphony and concerto, as well as chamber music, instrumental pieces, and choral works, it is his output for the organ for which he is now best known. The Serbian-American pianist Ivan Ilic helps to redress the balance with this new recording of two of Jongen’s substantial sets of Préludes for piano. The 13 Préludes, Op. 69 are expansive in nature and extremely poetic – each bears an evocative title. They are dedicated to Émile Bosquet who gave their première, in 1923. The 24 Petits Préludes dans tous les tons were begun in 1940 and (like Bach’s preludes and fugues) circle through each and every key, major and minor. Arranged in twelve pairs, the minor key following the major on the same tonic note, these works reflect Jongen’s affinity for (and mastery of) their free form, as well as demonstrating his mature compositional style.

“… Ivan Ilic plays impeccably throughout.”
Michael Church – BBC Music magazine – March 2023
Editor’s Choice – March
“… Captured in fine sound, this set is indispensable for lovers of early 20th-century piano music. Jongen was not the only composer to write for piano in the shadow of Debussy – another was Roger-Ducasse – but we owe Ilic and Chandos a debt of gratitude for bringing these preludes to a wider audience. I enjoy them more with each hearing.” *****
Phillip Scott – Limelightmagazine.com.au – 9 February 2023
“… The tried and trusted Potton Hall acoustic is perfect for this music, allowing for a nice amount of air around the piano but not being too lively for all of those hard-won rhythmic details and subtleties of nuance. Ivan Ilic’s championing of less well-known piano music is much appreciated, and long may his fruitful alliance with the Chandos label continue.”
Dominy Clements – Musicwebinternational.com – 26 January 2023
“… Jongen’s very personal and original music, without the slightest imitation, is always superbly composed, attractive and entertaining. Ilic plays the 13 Préludes, Op. 69, with evocative titles such as ‘Fear,’ ‘Nostalgia,’ ‘Tenderness,’ ‘Black Butterflies’ and ‘To Dance,’ very poetically and with an often touching warmth…. Ivan Ilic’s nuanced playing is ravishing in this cycle as well.[ 24 ‘Petits Préludes dans tous les tons’].” *****
Remy Franck – Pizzicato.lu – 19 January 2023
“… What is unarguable is Ilic’s imperturbable authority and empathy, and Chandos’ superb sound.”
Bryce Morrison – International Piano – January/February 2023
“…13 Préludes of 1922, character pieces whose rhythmic and harmonic subtleties continually spread joy and surprise. Ilic’s playing displays exactly the key ingredients required by such forgotten repertoire: clarity, passion and panache.” ****
Geoff Brown – The Times – 3 January 2023
