David Lloyd-Jones
David Lloyd-Jones began his professional career in 1959 on the music staff of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and soon became much in demand as a freelance conductor for orchestral and choral concerts, BBC broadcasts and television studio opera productions. He has appeared at The Royal Opera, Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera and Wexford Festival Opera, as well as the Cheltenham Music Festival, Leeds Festival and Edinburgh International Festival. In 1972 he was appointed Assistant Music Director at English National Opera where he conducted an extensive repertoire, which included the first British performance of Prokofiev’s War and Peace. In 1978, at the invitation of the Arts Council of Great Britain, he founded a new full-time opera company, Opera North, with its resident orchestra, the English Northern Philharmonia, of which he became Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. During his twelve seasons with the company he conducted fifty new productions; these included productions of Les Troyens and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and the British stage première of Strauss’s Daphne. He also gave numerous orchestral concerts, making festival appearances in France and Germany among others. David Lloyd-Jones maintains a busy career as a conductor in the concert hall and the opera house, which takes him to leading musical centres throughout the world. He has made a number of very successful recordings of British and Russian music and in 2007 released a much-acclaimed disc of Sullivan’s Irish Symphony and the ballet Pineapple Poll, arranged by Sir Charles Mackerras from music by Sullivan.
