Gerald Finley

Born in Montreal, Canada, the award winning bass-baritone Gerald Finley began singing as a chorister in Ottawa, and completed his musical studies in the UK, at the Royal College of Music, King’s College Cambridge, and National Opera Studio. As a leading singer and dramatic interpreter of his generation, he has given acclaimed performances at the world’s major opera and concert venues and made award winning recordings on CD and DVD on major labels. He has dedicated his career to the wide range of vocal art, encompassing opera from Mozart through Wagner to contemporary masters, orchestral works, and song, and collaborated with the greatest orchestras and conductors of our time. His many solo recital CDs have been devoted to songs by a variety of composers. For Chandos, he has recorded Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony and the title role in The Pilgrim’s Progress, and his popular CD of orchestral songs by Stanford was made the Editor’s Choice in the 2006 Gramophone Awards. His disc of Great Operatic Arias, in English, garnered much acclaim, including a Juno Award in Canada. He has commissioned works by composers such as Peter Lieberson, Kaija Saariaho, Julian Philips, and Einojuhani Rautavaara. He was awarded a Grammy for his recording of the title role in John Adams’s opera Doctor Atomic. Gerald Finley has climbed Kilimanjaro for the charity Help Musicians UK and in 2014 was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada.
