Omer Meir Wellber

Having established himself as one of today’s leading conductors of operatic and orchestral repertoire alike, Omer Meir Wellber has held the position of Principal Guest Conductor at the Semperoper Dresden since September 2018 and Music Director of Teatro Massimo in Palermo since January 2020. He has been Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic since July 2019 and made his debut at the BBC Proms conducting the orchestra in two concerts featuring works by Mozart, Haydn, and Ben-Haim. In collaboration with the BBC Philharmonic and the Royal Northern College of Music, he leads master-classes and courses for students and also supports musical education in the UK through innovative concerts for children. He has conducted some of the world’s most prestigious ensembles, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre national de Lyon, Staatskapelle Dresden, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester in Hamburg, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI di Torino, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, and Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, as well as at The Metropolitan Opera in New York and Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. Despite his demanding schedule of international engagements, he maintains a deeply rooted commitment to ensembles in his native Israel where, since 2009, he has been Music Director of the Raanana Symphonette and promotes the next generation of conductors through workshops, courses, and visits to universities. In October 2019, Berlin Verlag published Omer Meir Wellber’s first novel, Die vier Ohnmachten des Chaim Birkner. In 2020, the novel will also be published in French, by Éditions du sous-sol, and in Italian, by Sellerio Editore.
