Onyx Brass
Celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2018, Onyx Brass continues to be the leading light in establishing the brass quintet as a medium for serious chamber music, presenting it in the entertaining and articulate style that has become the group’s trademark. The magazine BBC Music described the group as ‘easily the classiest brass ensemble in Britain’, and Gramophone hailed ‘some of the most thrilling chamber brass-playing of its kind’. The group is regularly featured on BBC Radio 3. It has commissioned and performed the world premières of well over 100 works, and many more are in the pipeline. Education is a large part of its remit: workshops and master-classes range from primary school to the Juilliard School. Work with singers also forms a central part of its activity, often under the auspices of the John Armitage Memorial Trust, with which it has been affiliated since its inception. It has recorded with the BBC Singers, the Choir of Westminster Abbey, and the St Bride’s Choir, London. During 2014, it toured the country, bringing contemporary brass music to bandstands, parks, and public spaces as part of the project Tour de Brass! which was supported by the New Music Biennial Scheme of PRS for Music and featured a new commission by the British composer David Sawer. Onyx Brass is very grateful to the team of extra brass players, percussionists, and one flautist who have joined the group for this latest recording project. It regularly expands depending on repertoire and all the extra musicians are regular players with the group on such occasions. Onyx Brass is incredibly proud of this celebrated roster of superstars who seem happy to join us. www.onyxbrass.co.uk
