“…It [CD] begins with the Metamorphoses by Richard Strauss in a very transparent, flexible, well-structured, atmospheric and thoroughly beautiful interpretation. In the first movement of Beethoven’s Eroica Salonen is much faster than Toscanini. But it doesn’t even sound so fast, because the ‘con brio’ is very logically expressed. Salonen differentiates the funeral march very well and makes it more dramatic than most of his colleagues, with powerful accentuation, far away from all the solemnity that one often hears, but nevertheless with a great deal of meaning and depth. The scherzo hurries along freshly and the finale is also very rhetorically performed, with many sometimes unusual details and not always as fluid as with other conductors.” ****
