About
Barthold Heinrich Brockes wrote a libretto on the Passion of Christ – based on the account in Matthew’s Gospel – which was set to music by many composers of his time, including Reinhard Keiser, Georg Philip Telemann and George Frideric Handel. It is Handel’s version of the latter that the period-instrument ensemble Arcangelo has chosen to present here. Under the direction of Jonathan Cohen, these specialists in the Baroque repertory are joined by the voices of Sandrine Piau, whose numerous Handel recordings are regarded as a benchmark, the tenor Stuart Jackson and the baritone Konstantin Krimmel, recently revealed in a debut recital for Alpha (Saga, ALPHA549). Together they resurrect the operatic splendour of a work that was first performed in 1719 and is thought to have influenced numerous passages of J. S. Bach’s St John Passion, written a few years later.

“… Jonathan Cohen and the ensemble Arcangelo give a performance that is more than just technically competent… I was especially impressed by the virtuosic performance by tenor Andrew Tortise as one of the four “Faithful Souls”

“… Arcangelo bring their Baroque expertise to this pristine interpretation of Handel’s Brockes Passion. The soloists are fabulous, particularly Sandrine Piau who shimmers above the orchestra,” ****

“… intimate performance, meticulously prepared and superbly executed … Fans of Sandrine Piau … will need no prompting.”

“… The two male soloists, both still young artists, are the tenor Stuart Jackson as the Evangelist and the baritone Konstantin Krimmel as Jesus. Many pleasing points come together here, so that both present their roles convincingly both vocally and interpretatively. Both already winners of competitions, they are on their way and, as far as the baritone is concerned, have already attracted positive attention. The soloists in and out of the choir in their smaller passages are in no way inferior to the big names. As already mentioned, they offer clear and understandable pronunciation, both individually and as a group, although they are not native speakers. But even their roles are fully and lovingly created and not dismissed as supporting roles…” *****
