About
BACH: EARLY CANTATAS, VOL. 3 – WEIMAR II
This two-disc set selling for the price of one CD presents three cantatas dating from 1714, when Bach was serving at the court of Weimar: Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BVW 21; Erschallet, ihr Lieder, BVW 172; and Himmelskönig, sei willkommen, BWV 182. International Record Review commented on the previous release: ‘The Purcell Quartet and guests are most welcome: even the most distinguished of period performers with larger ensembles can’t achieve the intimacy that the forces here have at their disposal.’ Uniquely, The Purcell Quartet employs single voices rather than a choir, which is how the works would have been originally performed. The Purcell Quartet is joined by several instrumental colleagues and a distinguished cast of vocal soloists: Emma Kirkby, Michael Chance, Charles Daniels and Peter Harvey.

The recorded sound fits the fresh immediacy of the performances like a glove
BBC Music Magazine
Whatever the authentic arguments, to hear three of Bach’s finest early cantatas played this way, with every line of counterpoint pristine and audible, is a profoundly moving experience, especially in performances as expert and spiritually uplifting as the
Classic FM Magazine
It is marvellous to hear a group of singers and players so at ease, such masters of the ways of chamber music. Buy it, and if you don’t have the previous volumes, buy them too
