Notes
The specialist early-music ensemble Da Camera marks the 250th anniversary of Telemann’s death with this unique recording of original trio sonatas involving recorder and viol. These are among the greatest pieces Telemann ever composed. As he wrote in 1740: ‘how could I possibly remember everything I composed for strings and winds? I particularly devoted myself to the composing of trios… People even flattered me as having done my best work here.’ The musicians of Da Camera heartily agree.
The ingenuity and variety of music, structures, and instrumental ensemble, combined with fascinating notes by the recorder player Emma Murphy, make this album a must-have for everyone, from Telemann’s many enthusiasts to those curious about early music.

Reviews
“… Unhesitatingly recommended to all fans of Telemann.”
James A Altena - Fanfare - May/June 2018
“… Telemann’s chamber music is as rewarding for players as it is for listeners. Da Camera … clearly come under its spell and bring both authority and affection to performances of much distinction. These are captured in the excellent recorded sound, while the informative programme notes complete a very accomplished and welcome release.”
Andrew Mayes – The Consort – Summer 2018
“… Emma Murphy, is able sometimes to draw from her instrument plaintive sounds that almost seem to come from a pleading human voice. The other players here are Susanna Pell on viols and Steven Devine on harpsichord. They join Murphy in polished and springy performances. As spacers the program adds Nos. 2 and 8 of the Fantasies for harpsichord that were published in 1732-33-absolutely delightful little three-movement mini-suites, full of the composer’s sparkling unpredictability. For serious Telemann collectors, this release is a very worthwhile addition in the chamber music category.”
John Barker – American Record Guide – March/April 2018
“... Lovers of either recorder or viola da gamba - or both - will enjoy this disc. Emma Murphy and Susanna Pell are fine players of their respective instruments. The treble viol, especially, contributes to the attraction of this disc. This instrument plays a very minor role in modern performance practice, and Telemann's sonatas with a part for treble viol belong among the least known part of his chamber music. Steven Devine plays two of his 36 keyboard fantasias. These are rather short works in three movements; the latter is a repeat of the first. Devine adds some nice ornamentation. His two colleagues also know how to ornament Telemann's music... This is a pleasing and attractive addition to the growing Telemann discography.”
Johan van Veen – MusicWeb-International.com – 24 January 2017
“...the playing is beautiful and the meticulous interpretations reward repeated listening. A must-have for the Telemann fiends but a delight for all.” ****
Angus McPherson - Limelight magazine (Australia) - 8 January 2018
“... this is a fascinating survey of Telemann’s recorder and viol sonatas ... Da Camera clearly believes fervently in this music... A brilliant, life-enhancing disc.” *****
Colin Clarke - Classical Music magazine - December 2017
"Four trios from the 'Darmstadt' manuscripts are persuasively taken by treble viol (rather than violin), recorders and harpsichord. Playing and recording sparkle." ****
Paul Riley - BBC Music magazine (Brief Notes section)- Christmas 2017
