About
THE FILM MUSIC OF CONSTANT LAMBERT AND LORD BERNERS
This is the first disc on the Chandos Movies label to be devoted to a pair of composers, and the ‘tandem’ is no accident. The two were great friends both musically and socially and neither produced very much in the way of film music. It was possible therefore conveniently to represent their output in a single but well-filled CD. Each composed in his own distinctive style, with a cosmopolitan rather than a purely English accent. Lambert, who worked with Diaghilev on a production of Romeo and Juliet, was a good choice for the film Anna Karenina. A few years earlier he had written the score for Merchant Seamen. A versatile eccentric, Lord Berners worked as a diplomat before succeeding to his title. He was asked to write music for the films Champagne Charlie, The Halfway House and Nicholas Nickleby, all produced for Ealing Studios in the 1940s.

Reviews
"... Under its regular conductor Rumon Gamba, the BC Concert Orchestra takes to these entertaining tidbits with its customary aplomb, and Chandos sound remains top-of-the-line as usual. One of the most interesting and enjoyable entries in this necessary series."
Paul A Snook - Fanfare - November/December 2008
Performance **** Recording ****
"... Rumon Gamba secures orchestral playing that is both deft and precise."
Malcolm Hayes - BBC Music Magazine - August 2008
"... Superb."
Howard Maxford - Starburst - June 2008
"Maestro Gamba’s film music series ventures into less familiar waters with this engaging entry…This is British film music at its best, and like the entire programme it’s performed with Rumon Gamba’s customary affection and enthusiasm."
Koldys - American Record Guide - September/October 2008
"There are novelties and first recordings here, all masterminded by Philip Lane whose sterling service to film composers continues unabated... Sympathetic performances throughout in a generous 80-minute CD."
Peter Dickinson - Gramophone magazine - August 2008
"... You can’t fault the performances, which are fiercely conducted by Rumon Gamba, and played with great finesse by the BBC Concert Orchestra. Vocalist Mary Carewe, meanwhile, is glorious." ***
Tim Ashley - The Guardian - 9 May 2008
