About
The Ukrainian soprano Olga Mykytenko has won numerous international awards, including the Grand Prix at the Maria Callas International Singing Contest in Athens. Her extraordinary musicality, solid vocal technique, easy coloraturas, and strong expression allow her to sing major roles, from Iolanta, Mimì, and Nedda to Gilda, Violetta, and Lucia. Engaged for many years as a soloist at the National Opera of Ukraine in Kiev, where she made her debut, Olga has performed in opera houses and concert halls around the world.
For this her debut album for Chandos, she brings her interpretations of many of Verdi’s greatest soprano roles from the stage into the studio. Her programme also spans the majority of Verdi’s operatic output, from Ernani (Elvira) via Macbeth (Lady Macbeth) through to I vespri siciliani (Elena) and of course taking in Violetta (La traviata), among many others, along the way.
Accompanied by her compatriot Kirill Karabits and the thrillingly sympathetic Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, this recital is a vocal and musical tour de force.

“…The fair and innocent Luisa Miller is certainly the antithesis to Lady Macbeth and her humble prayer to God is sensitively delineated. One can feel a tear in her voice. Mixed feelings are displayed in Violetta’s big aria that concludes the first act of La traviata, but it ends in rapturous joy. Olga Mykytenko catches all this admirably and my only hang-up is that Alfredo is absent. His few but important off-stage phrases add so much to the sense of a live occasion. But this is a minor quibble. Everything else is so satisfying: the quality of the recording, the playing of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the idiomatic conducting of its Chief Conductor since eleven years – he is a prolific conductor of opera – and of course the inspired singing of Olga Mykytenko. With playing time of close to 75 minutes you get a lot of music for your money.”

Ms. Mykytenko has a very attractive coloratura voice, quite strong throughout most of her considerable range, and with a well-controlled vibrato. She has a rather pure, angelic sound, though her voice seems to have sufficient resonance to carry it over orchestral tuttis. Her technique and agility are impressive as well. On this recording, she sings with enough passion and conviction to meet the dramatic demands of the various roles involved here… Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra offer splendid accompaniment in every number, and Chandos provides vivid and well balanced sound reproduction… This is a fine effort all around and well worth the attention of Verdi and opera mavens.”
