Richard Hickox, as might be expected, conducts with great warmth, subtlety and a keen sense of drama.
BBC Music Magazine ‘Review of the Month’ on CHAN 9
Already in Chandoss Walton series Richard Hickox has shown what an understanding interpreter he is…he paces the music superbly, flexibly heightening the moments of mock-melodrama…
*** The Penguin Complete Guide on CHAN 9245 (The B
If nothing else, Richard Hickox and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales prove the composer wrong. From the short orchestral prelude to the play, with its fanfares and trilling woods, this Is Walton on best public behaviour – and was any twentieth –century English composer as skilled at writing public music as Walton?… Yet in the three songs that are threaded through the play Walton can strike the most intimate note too.
International Record Review
This release is very welcome for it brings us two hitherto unknown works of Walton in spectacular sound and outstanding performances.

Richard Hickox draws magnetic performances from chorus and orchestra alike…
The Penguin Complete Guide (Rosette) on CHAN 9370/
Hickox conducts with effortless Waltonian urbanity…
The Sunday Times on CHAN 9245 (The Bear)
Completely outshines the earlier recording…
The Guardian ‘Classical CD of the Week’ on CHAN 93
The striking choral finale , like the shanties, has a powerful contribution by Tom Randle. Caroline Carragher as the Queen, Jean Rigby as Columbus’s lover, and the baritone Roderick Williams all sing well, as do the BBC National Chorus of Wales. Richard Hickox conducts warmly and the hybrid SACD sound is vivid and clear.
