Notes
"Grainger’s tremendous musical talent can be likened to a wild vine which thrives without need for pruning" writes Barry Ould in the sleeve notes to this album - referring to the prolific period from the age of sixteen when Grainger wrote an enormous amount of music. But it was not just a prolific period, it was also a rich one, as many of the pieces recorded here will show. As usual, they are very varied in style and construction, and make a most enjoyable recital programme. It is full of suprises too, with his setting of Kipling’s The First Chantey ranking as one his most powerful creations. Melodic inspiration seems to be endless with this composer, and makes one wonder at his neglect in the recital hall. With detailed and informative sleeve notes this disc will be eagerly sought by Grainger’s many enthusiasts.

Reviews
With excellent playing by Penelope Thwaites, this is the kind of performance that etches itself on the memory and becomes inseparable from the songs, words and music.
Opera Now - July/August 1998
He [Martyn Hill] gives magnificent performances, and is matched by Penelope Thwaites who seems unerringly to make sense of the idiosyncratic piano parts
JBS - Gramophone - August 1998
All in all, one of the most revealing issues in a most important recording project. Highly recommended.
Peter J Rabinowitz - Fanfare - September/October 1998
This CD presents Grainger as a rather more serious composer than many give him credit for. If you’re collecting the entire series, you won’t hesitate. If not, try this just for being different.
The Delian - September 1998
The performances are uniformly first -rate, as are the recording quality and accompanying notes.
AM - Opera News (USA) - 1 October 1998
