BERNSTEIN: MASS
This is the Chandos Disc of the Month. The Mass is one of Bernstein’s most controversial compositions. It was written at the request of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC and received its gala premiere at the centre in September 1971. Bernstein declared his intention in writing the piece had been ‘to communicate as directly and universally as I can a reaffirmation of faith’. The work recalls Britten’s War Requiem with its use of Catholic liturgical text interspersed with commentary in the vernacular. The work caused a storm of controversy, particularly with its exploration of the political and social concerns of the era, Nixon and Vietnam among them. Unlike Britten, however, Bernstein used a range of musical styles, from classical to pop. Mass is performed by the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich conducted by Kristjan Järvi, with the baritone Randall Scarlata in the role of the Celebrant.
