Notes
Key to the success that instrumental music enjoyed during the course of the seventeenth century was the growing fascination with the musical genre of the Italian concerto, whose reference models may be found in those established by Arcangelo Corelli in his Concerti grossi op. VI and Antonio Vivaldi in his Estro armonico op. III, both printed between 1711 and 1714 in Amsterdam, a major publishing centre that additionally guaranteed an efficient international distribution system. Both collections – both in terms of form and style – fully reflect the basic idea of concerto as a combination of heterogeneous elements in which antithesis, or dialectical contrast, has a fundamental strategic function.
