Notes
HANDEL: FLAMING ROSE Philadelphia’s baroque orchestra Tempesta di Mare here joins forces with the soprano Julianne Baird for an intimate programme featuring Handel’s nine German arias. The arias are profound and evocative meditations on nature’s beauty as an expression of the divine and together are as close as Handel came to creating a song cycle. Written in London, the arias represent one of Handel’s few creative engagements with his native tongue. The programme also includes two of Handel’s most striking chamber works. This is Tempesta di Mare’s second disc for Chandos, following their recording of lute concerti by Weiss released in 2004.

This seriously addictive disc should make New Yorkers envy Philadelphia for its sparkling early-music orchestra, Tempesta di Mare. Here, the group’s five expert core players – who handle archlute, cello, flute, harpsichord, recorder, theorbo and violin – pay handsome tribute to Handel. Soprano Julianne Baird joins them for the Nine German Arias, largely lyrical reworkings of biblical passages by the poet Barthold Heinrich Brockes… Highly recommended for lazy Sunday mornings.
New York Time Out
…Handelians will want to hear this Handel specialist in repertoire that suits her vocally to perfection…. Her instrumental backing, the Tempesta di Mare Chamber players… are accompanists of the highest order and get their opportunity to shine in two of the magnificent Op. 2 Trio Sonatas… The singing and playing in this well-conceived combination of vocal and instrumental chamber music makes this one of the most individual Handel discs for many a month and as such it can be heartily recommended.
International Record Review
[Julianne Baird] is surely on her way to becoming the American Emma Kirkby, and this attractive release makes on hope that more recordings will appear from this source…. The singing and playing in this well-conceived combination of vocal and instrumental chamber music makes this one of the most individual Handel discs for many a month and as such it can be heartily recommended.
International Record Review
Baird sings with a more delicate timbre… the singing isn exquisitely stylish, as is the playing of tempesta di Mare, who shine in the F major and B minor trio sonatas.
Sunday Times – Classical CD of the week.
Recent praise for Julianne Baird and Tempesta di Mare: Julianne Baird is a vocal phenomenon… a rare and wondrous voice guided by an extraordinary musical intelligence. Fanfare
The players of Tempesta di Mare supply a lovely, understated accompaniment that is historically informed but without any ornamental gimmickry.

This is a lovely recording of this group of arias… a delightful and satisfying disc on its own terms

I Fagiolini’s perfect technique is put entirely at the service of Monteverdi’s music. The ensemble has complete command of the harmonies and languages (both verbal and musical) that the composer so memorably fashioned over the course of his long career… It is hard to convey the close connection that I Fagiolini has to this music; it goes even beyond their first-rate technique and mastery of the style. Their determination to work hard and plunge the depths of meaning honours the music in the best possible way… Just listen, again and again
