GREAT OPERATIC ARIAS: SIR THOMAS ALLEN, VOLUME 2
Sir Thomas Allen, who has enjoyed a long and illustrious career, is still going strong. Over the years he has developed a particular affinity with the works of Mozart and Verdi, having given definitive performances in operas such as Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Verdi’s Falstaff. All the arias and duets featured in this new recording are by these two composers, with the spicy exception of a popular song by Kurt Weill. The Sunday Telegraph wrote of Volume 1, ‘How good to have this anthology of Thomas Allen’s versatility in a wide range of his operatic roles… anyone who cherishes good singing will rejoice in this great baritone’s smooth legato, perfect diction, subtle characterisation and of course beautiful and unmistakable voice.’

Reviews
Falstaff’s great dream of cuckoldry, and Macbeth’s vision of desolate old age are magnificent. So too, are Allen’s lengthier scenes aw the dying Rodrigo from Don Carlos and as Germont père with Claire Rutter’s Violetta, from La traviata.
BBC Music Magazine
It is indeed a long while from May to December, and Sir Tom, now inevitably in the September of his distinguished career, has somehow managed to smuggle his voice unscathed across the frontiers of time. This is not a nostalgic survey of favourite roles and arias but a demonstration of the singers art above all the fine welding of words and music Pure pleasure.
Gramophone
A delight for collectors and a masterclass for aspirant singers in characterisation, enunciation and, above all, diction.
