Notes
The exploration by John Wilson of Copland’s major orchestral output with the BBC Philharmonic has now reached Volume 3, with this invigorating programme recorded in surround-sound.
It opens with An Outdoor Overture, a cheerful and breezy piece which Copland composed in 1938, intending to spearhead an initiative encouraging ‘American Music for American Youth’.
Originally written for organ and orchestra, the First Symphony is presented here in its revised version (1926-28) for large orchestra. The six concise movements of Statements (1932-35) introduce a new style, their gritty soundscapes being stunning examples of what Copland later would refer to as ‘hard-bitten’ pieces.
The concluding work is the expressive, fantastical Dance Symphony (1929) which explores different styles of symphonic movements, its dark aura a residue of its origin as a ballet on a grotesque vampire theme, composed 1922-25 and named Grohg. The symphony has remained a highly controversial piece ever since.

Reviews
"...Chandos's sound is typical of the house and works well with the performances. Wilson's interpretations are worth having despite the formidable completion from Alsop in two of them..."
Roger Hecht - American Record Guide - July/Aug 2018
“… Wilson, and the BBC Philharmonic have nailed the Copland idiom and mystique with some of the most insightful readings and best playing of the composer’s music I know. I will be fascinated to see where Wilson goes next wit this survey. Meanwhile, I continue to give his Copland series top billing and a top recommendation.”
Jerry Dubins – Fanfare – May/June 2018
"...Throughout, Chandos's recorded sound, SACD-encoded, is opulent and relaxed ..." ****
David Gutman - Classical Source.com - February 2018
Performance **** Recording ****
“... this ebulliently performed collection offers a fascinating portrait of a greatly skilled composer in transition. Don’t hesitate for a moment.
Geoff Brown - BBC Music magazine - March 2018
“... All in all, a thought-provoking release.”
Andrew Farach-Cotton - Gramophone magazine - February 2018
“...The BBC Philharmonic’s performance is involved and seems to relish the grittier aspects of the score (the sparse scoring of ‘Dogmatic’ or the meaty ‘Prophetic’ for example). The Outdoor Overture, originally for a youth orchestra, is unremittingly, brightly optimistic, showcasing Chandos’ superb recording...” *****
Colin Clarke – Classical Music magazine – February 2018
Album of the Week
“... Wilson relishes the eerie orchestral effects of the central Dance of the Young Girl, but also revels in the Stravinskyan rhythmic audacity of the faster sections. He is an ideal champion for this latterly neglected music ...”
Hugh Canning - The Sunday Times (Culture magazine) - 4 February 2018
Remy Louis - Diapason magazine (France) - February 2018
“...Sharp and dissonant or darkly exciting, depending on your taste; uncomfortable works but delivered with verve and panache by Wilson and the BBC Philharmonic.”
Ian Lace - MusicWeb-International.com - 29 January 2018
“...Highly recommended.”
Graham Williams – CDChoice .co.uk – 26 January 2018
Andrea Bedetti – Audiophile Sound magazine (Italy) – November/December 2017
