Schubert: Die schöne Müllerin (The Maid of the Mill), Op. 25, D. 795

Tenor Pavol Breslik has for a long time now been one of the most in-demand lyrical tenors on the world’s operatic stages – but nor has he neglected the concert scene or the Liederabend. His youthful yet masculine timbre, possessing clarity of tone and a timbre neither dark and baritonal nor overly bright, seems almost predestined for the world of Franz Schubert’s Die scho¨ne Mu¨llerin, heard here on this Orfeo new release. The overnight success of Pavol Breslik (b. 1979) began in 2005, when he was chosen the “Most Promising Singer of the Year” in a critics’ survey in the magazine “Opernwelt”. As a member of the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden from 2003 to 2006, he was heard in several Mozart roles, Janácek and Mussorgsky among others. As a free-lance performer since 2006, he has further expanded his Mozart repertoire and performed at the Salzburg Festival and the Met, among other prestigious festivals and opera houses. Mr. Breslik has also been a welcome guest on the concert stage, with performances at the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh Festival and with the Orchestre National de France in Beethoven’s “Missa Solemnis” and Ninth Symphony. Recorded appearances include Handel’s “Il trionfo del tempo” and Dvorák’s “Stabat Mater”.
