Notes
This is the sixth and final volume in Chandos’ survey of orchestral works by Vincent d’Indy. The project, with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Rumon Gamba, has aimed to bring the composer’s neglected, eclectic, and richly orchestrated works to a wider audience. Exceptionally, this final recording is issued on SACD; previous volumes have garnered many awards, from Volume 1 (Grammy-nominated) and Volume 2 (Gramophone ‘Editor’s Choice’) to Volume 5 (‘Choc de Classica’), confirming Chandos’ reputation as a top label in groundbreaking search for neglected musical gems.
D’Indy’s Wagnerian influences are clearly highlighted both in the three interlinked symphonic ouvertures of Wallenstein, which employ leitmotiv techniques and cyclic themes, and in the Prelude to Act III of Fervaal, d’Indy’s first opera, a work of Wagnerian scale and proportions, displaying the influence of Parsifal.
The three other pieces on the disc were written for small orchestras. The lightweight sophisticated pieces that make up the Sérénade et Valse and the early Lied for Cello and Orchestra contrast with the five-movement Suite dans le style ancien, based on traditional dance forms and reflecting d’Indy’s enthusiasm for early music. The soloist in the Lied, Bryndís Halla Gylfadóttir, is principal cellist in the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.

" A record like this reinforces just how profound and versatile a composer D’Indy can be Gamba’s readings are light – not lightweight – and transparent in their sonorities. While that naturally helps with the shorter, charming works, it’s really a benefit in Wallenstein, which can easily get blustery and vulgar. Gamba’s approach gives the music genuine distinction.”
Don O’Connor – American Record Guide – November/December 2015
“ the Iceland Symphony Orchestra responds with appropriate subtlety, and is heard to advantage in what is likely the most enticing sound which Chandos has yet secured from Reykjavik ”
Richard Whitehouse – classicalsource.com – October 2015
***** (Exceptional Disc)
Giuseppe Rossi – Musica magazine (Italy) – September 2015
“… Splendidly recorded the Chandos team has provided a warm acoustic but not too muddy. There’s reasonable clarity and first-class balance. The orchestra’s consistently ravishing and lucid support under Gamba has conviction together with expressive characterisation.”
Michael Cookson – MusicWeb-International.com – August 2015
“This invaluable traversal of D’Indy’s orchestral music continues with the inventive Wallenstein, delectable Suite in Ancient Style and heartfelt cello Lied.” ****
Julian Haylock – BBC Music magazine (Brief Notes Section) – September 2015
The playing of the Iceland Symphony on this disc is very competent but it is the woodwinds that stand out. They are called upon to create a wide variety of moods in these works and are up to the task in each one. The brass, especially the trumpets, is also quite fine. This is the first disc in the D’Indy series to be recorded in SACD and the sound is sumptuous, especially in the Fervaal Prelude and the Suite Ancien he is full sympathy with the music and obtains mostly excellent results. Those collecting the entire series of D’Indy orchestral music will find this one of the better discs. Those who are looking into D’Indy’s music for the first time will find these works a good introduction to his varied output."
William Kreindler - MusicWeb-International.com - 14 July 2015
"all these performances from Reykjavík ideally combine conviction, polish and genuine freshness of new discovery, while Chandos’s SACD sound is as superlatively vivid and natural in timbre as we have come to expect." *****
Andrew Achenbach - ClassicalEar (App) - 16 July 2015
“… Gamba’s conducting evinces the care and thought characteristic of the retrospective as a whole. There’s an admirable awareness of the crafted sensuousness of d’Indy’s textures, the slightly studied novelty of his compositional style. …”
Tim Ashley – Gramophone magazine – July 2015
