“This disc is a very pleasant way to spend an hour. Except for the fantasies on Die Zauberflöte and Carmen, all of the famous arias are simple transcriptions with the flute replacing the soprano voice, appropriately so as their ranges overlap so closely. Unlike some instrumental soloists who undertake such transcriptions, Katherine Bryan seems to have a real knowledge of the operatic repertoire and the dramatic and musical context for each excerpt. She can produce a wide range of colours, so that her Juliet does, in fact, sound different from her Cio-Cio San. Her interpretive choices regarding tempo, inflection, and phrasing indicate an understanding of the vocal idiom… The Orchestra Opera North plays well … and Bramwell Tovey conductions with affection… “
