Notes
Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehar (1870-1948) is most widely known for his operettas, namely The Merry Widow. Giuditta is an operatic five scene musical comedy, with libretto by Paul Knepler and Fritz Lohner-Beda. It was Lehar's largest and final operetta. The work was premiered in 1934 at the Vienna State Opera. This recording features the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the Rundfunkorchester.

"Lehár's bittersweet late triumph becomes a hit for Munich Radio... Lehár really pushes the boat out, creating his richest, most beautifully orchestrated score, packed with melodic arias including Giuditta’s Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß. Ulf Schirmer’s new Munich recording is orchestrally stunning, perfectly paced with full, rich sound. Christiane Libor is glorious and daring in the title role, her voice passionate, full and securely managed. A tenor to watch, Nikolai Schukoff matches her note for note in the taxing Tauber role of Octavio... " ****

"... Nikolai Schukoff is a suitably heroic Antonio... Laura Schwerwitzl a sparkling Anita and Ralf Simon a sweet-toned Pierinno. I the pit Ulf Schirmer relishes Lehár's lush orchestration... "
Christopher Cook - BBC Music magazine - November 2016
"... The playing throughout is warm and transparent. Schirmer brings out every glint of the harp and rattle of the snare drum, and caresses Lehár's swirling woodwind countermelodies - but crucially, keeps the action moving forwards. That's probably the single most impressive quality of this recording; that and its sheer generosity. This is the most complete version I've encountered of this often-cut score... this is a fine, affectionate recording: recommendable whether you've just discovered Lehár's intoxicating final masterpiece or, like Octavio, you lost your heart to Giuditta a long time ago."
