About
The latest in their highly regarded Wagner opera series, Hallé present the live recording of their acclaimed Bridgewater Hall performance.
‘the Hallé were the stars, responsive to every nuance of Elder’s direction.’The Times on the Hallé’s performance of Das Rheingold
‘Elder’s interpretation combined lyricism with drama in a way that only the greatest Wagner conductors can realize.’ Opera Magazine on the Hallé’s performance of Das Rheingold
Das Rheingold stands as the Vorabend or “Preliminary Evening” of Wagner’s epic Der Ring des Nibelungen, designed to be free of the traditional operatic concepts of aria and operatic chorus, and presented as the more epic Bühnenfestspiel or “stage festival play”, with the linking of dramatic elements through the use of musical motifs. Recorded at the Bridgewater Hall, and produced by Hallé’s award winning engineer Steve Portnoi, this release captures all the drama of the acclaimed live performance which received rave reviews for conductor, orchestra and cast, alike. Recorded live at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester 27 November 2016. Produced by Steve Portnoi.

Reviews
"... This is one of the most beautifully played Rheingolds I've ever heard in a long time. The players respond well to every tempo alteration Elder asks for. I'd recommend the set just for the orchestra... The sound is very beautiful: well-balanced and sumptuous..."
David Reynolds - American Record Guide – November/December 2018
“… Elder’s grip is total. He believes in every note of the score, shapes it carefully (no melodrama, no lurchings) and stirs the orchestra to a degree of magnificence rare even for the Hallé….” *****
Geoff Brown – The Times – 1 June 2018
“…Paterson’s Wotan is certainly authoritative enough, but needs a more assertive foil than Samuel Youn’s surprisingly lightweight Alberich...Clive Bayley’s fathomlessly dark Fafner, Susan Bickley’s humane Fricka and Nicky Spence’s instinctively theatrical Mime are all well worth preserving, as is the playing of the Hallé under Elder, and his unerring sense of the seamless musical architecture …” ***
The Guardian – 31 May 2018
Performance **** Recording ***
“…Elder extracts some telling detail, especially from more lyrical passages, but nevertheless much of its life stems from the excellent cast. Those who enjoyed the cycle so far needn’t hesitate, and Ring habituees will appreciate the spaciousness and detail.”
Michael Scott Rohan – BBC Music magazine – July 2018
“… An even greater triumph for the orchestra than their preceding Götterdämmerung and Walküre. Not only is there a special gloss on the sound (strings especially), a real Wagnerian klang, but the manner in which the solos (both sectional and individual) are now taken bears witness to the fluency of freshly acquired experience… The cast are strongly characterised and not always as you might expect; some fresh thinking here.”
Mike Ashman – Gramophone magazine July 2018
