Notes
Stravinsky’s Firebird was an instant hit with audience and critics alike at its 1910 premiere and has retained this popularity throughout the following century. The legacy of Bela Bartok's Piano Concerto No 3 and The Miraculous Mandarin are similarly exalted. Piano Concerto No 3 is Bartók’s final work, having been completed only four days before the composer succumbed to a long battle with leukaemia, while The Miraculous Mandarin, performed here in the suite version, is dramatic, mysterious and sinister. In addition, this release feature excerpts from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, which significantly marks the composer's 125th anniversary.

"With an intimate and restrained interpretation, Yefim Bronfman gives us one of the most moving accounts yet committed to disc of Bartók's final piano concerto. The orchestra's sound blends perfectly with the piano... The concerto alone makes this set essential listening. Good quality recorded sound, and minimal audience noise." **** (Really great)
Marius Dawn - Pianist magazine - February/March 2017
"This live concert, caught right at the end of Gergiev's tenure with the LSO, finds the orchestra on top form in a blazing performance of the Bartók ... The Firebird finds Gergiev and his players painting in the finest colours. The best performance, though, is the Bartók Concerto ..." *****

"Gergiev clearly adores this piece, and put his whole soul into the performance."
The Telegraph
"... an outstanding performance of the complete Firebird ballet. Gergiev, hands constantly aflutter, brought even the most insignificant transition passages to vivid life."
The Guardian
