Notes
María del Carmen was Enrique Granados’ first great operatic success and the stage work he held in highest regard. It was received with great acclaim at its première in 1898, admired for its refined and brilliant orchestral writing and for its profound lyricism. Using the folklore, language and sounds of Murcia in south-eastern Spain alongside the influence of Wagnerian thematic techniques, the opera is set in a rural village where a water shortage and a love triangle inflame the mutual hatred between the peasant farmer Pencho and his wealthy rival Javier.

Pierre Flinois - Classica magazine (France) - March 2017
"...Opera buffs need to hear this glorious music. …The singing is enjoyable and the orchestral playing by the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Belarus is more than up to the mark."
Rob Barnett - MusicWeb-International.com - October 2016
"... This is the republication of a Marco Polo release from 2004 with Enrique Granados’s opera Maria del Carmen. The production comes from the Wexford Festival and is expertedly conducted by Max Bragado-Darman. The orchestra is remarkable and the singers, suffering from a dry acoustic, are more or less acceptable." ****
Remy Franck - Pizzicato magazine - November 2016
