Notes
Piani’s 12 sonatas op.1 are all that survive of his output: everything else was lost or destroyed. Published in 1712, these sonatas provide a fascinating insight into baroque performing techniques. Piani’s instructions on dynamics, fingering, bowing techniques, ornamentation, tempo and characterisation were printed in the preface to the score. The music is of considerable beauty, and this album marks the world premiere recordings of these works. On this album his sonatas are placed alongside those of his great contemporaries, London-based fellow Italian Geminiani, and Handel, whose great D major sonata is one of his finest instrumental works.

Reviews
**** (Excellent disc)
Luca Segalla - Musica magazine (Italy) - May 2015
"... This is a superb disc, in fact one of the best discs with baroque violin music I have heard for some time. Making the acquaintance of the music of Giovanni Antonio Piani was a most pleasant experience. I hope that his other sonatas will be recorded in the near future, preferably by these three fine artists."
Johan van Veen - MusicWeb-International.com - 23 August 2012
"Percan remarks in the notes that after discovering Piani’s sonatas, he cast about for a way in which to present them to audiences. The result of his exploration, with its illuminating comparisons (and ingratiating performances in themselves of the sonatas by handel and Germiniani) deserves a warm commendation to those wishing to investigate unrecognized composers from the perios, to violinists in search of repertoire, and to general listeners all at the same time."
Robert Maxham - Fanfare - September/October 2012
