Notes
The conclusion to a three part-series of Igor Stravinsky’s ballets from Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes, performed by BBC national Orchestra of Wales under Thierry Fischer. These recordings capture the excitement and vibrancy of the BBC National Orchestra if Wales in live performances at their home of BBC Hoddinott Hall, Wales.
Almost no musical work has had such a powerful influence or evoked as much controversy as Stravinsky’s ballet score The Rite of Spring. The work’s premiere on 29 May 1913, at the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, was scandalous. In addition to the outrageous costumes, unusual choreography and bizarre story of pagan sacrafice, Stravinsky’s musical innovations tested the patience of the audience to the fullest.
This disc also features Francis Poulenc’s ballet les Biches, premiered at the Ballet Russes in 1924. Originally commissioned by Diaghilev to write a piece based on Glazunov’s Les Sylphides, Poulenc instead chose to base his piece on the paintings of Watteau that depicted Louis XV and various women in his’parc aux biches’.

Jerry Dubins - Fanfare - March/April 2012
This disc demonstrates imaginative programme planning. The BBC orchestra is on fine form under the baton of a conductor who is, seemingly, thoroughly at home in both of these very different scores. All in all, this disc is an attractive proposition."
John Quinn - musicwebinternational.com - 9 February 2012
The precision of the Welsh Orchestra is impressive, the clarity and vitality of the sound throwing up detail that one had long since stopped being suprising the fact that both these performances were recorded live is further testament to the thorough preparation and high quality of the work.
Edward Seckerson - Gramophone - September 2011
Performance **** Recording ****
this is a no nonsense, hard-driven account of The Rite, sure to raise the pulse rate. Both the ’Dance of the earth’ and ’Sacrifical dance’ combine searing energy and precision, all captured in excellet sound it [Les Biches] bounces along as genially as the Rite is menacing. It is wonderful to have the complete ballet for once, especially the rarely heard choruses
